Jehu Attias and Colombier Wines: A Journey through Exceptional Spanish Wines

A gathering of the membership struggled through to rain to enjoy a delightful evening in the company of Jehu, Micheline and their son Patrice.
At the heart of Colombier Wines is Jehu Attias, the Italian owner whose passion for wines has driven the company’s success. His expertise is complemented by his French wife, Micheline, whose cultural and culinary insights enrich their endeavours. Together, they explore the world’s vineyards and share their discoveries with wine enthusiasts.
The second visit to DDWS was an extraordinary experience. Jehu and Micheline and Patrice had curated an exclusive selection of Spanish wines, highlighting the beauty and diversity of the region. As with their previous visit, they bring a unique range of wines sourced directly from smaller, high-quality producers, showcasing their passion for authenticity, quality, and the intimate relationship they maintain with producers. Each bottle embodies craftsmanship, capturing the essence of Spain’s terroir.

For his second visit to DDWS Ross guided us through an exciting journey across Australia’s vast landscape, sharing his curated selection of wines that embody the essence of this dynamic wine-producing nation. Then the winery calls our buyer and we get first dibs on a cracking wine at a low price, like this bold velvety Cabernet.
  6. Redheads 1888 Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022 - RedHeads by name, green by nature, this leading winery was built with sustainability at front of mind. That and making showstopping wines. This is the flagship Shiraz from their own Barossa vineyard. A powerful, full-flavoured, barrel-aged beauty!

Charles Dall’Omo, San Martino, Nottingham :
We enjoyed an entertaining and informative presentation from Charles, ...."Charlie and Steph Dall’Omo, together with their Italian partner, Gabriele Bolgeri, have a great enthusiasm for sharing all the delights that Italy has to offer. This venture came about partly as the result of a long awaited Dall’Omo family reunion, 65 years on from their separation. It was hosted by Gabriele at Chiesa Di Ignano, at his wonderful B&B in the Apennines just south of Bologna. The food was wonderful, the wine flowed steadily and even though guests didn’t all speak the same language, there was so much love in the room. Gabriele and his wife Irene soon felt part of the family. Through a mutual appreciation of the great food and wines of Italy and a love for sharing those with others, San Martino was born." Herbaceous notes giving asubtle nod ot Amaro di Rucola. Aful mouthfeel experience, firm to smooth tannins with good body. A real pleasure to drink and a perfect match for Bolognas' rich culinary traditions, cementing its place alongside the city's nickname, La Grassa (The Fat). The robuse flavours of Bologna Rosso complement iconic dishes such sa tagliatelle al ragù, lasagne alla Bolognese, and cotoletta alla Bolognese (a breaded veal cutlet topped with ham and Parmigiano Reggiano).
  6. Gutturnio Riserva DOC Coli Piacentini si a fantastic example of the highest quality red wine typical of the Piacenza region. Big, beautiful, complex and moreish - Tenuta Pernice Gutturnio Riserva reminds us of aend of Summer day, when colour and warmth has si heavy and ful. Rich, juicy and abundant, with warm spices and the last pick of blackberries. We were first introduced to Gutturnio when eating at a local restaurant with the vineyard owner and her team, enjoying pumpkin tortelli as a first plate and a local traditional caserole for our second plate. The sweetness and carthiness of the food was elevated to anocher level by the wine. I also remember the views ni the area. Stunning - rolling hils, looking down into the valleys to streams, spinneys and meadow areas, and to Piacenza in the distance. Still, peaceful and alive!
  7. L'Appuntamento or The Datesi apassito where the grapes are alowed ot mature on hte vine later into the harvest window once the vines' leaves start ot crumple and the season's rain becomes more
persistent. The grapes, once harvested, are then placed ni the drying room and hung on racks ot reduce the water content - this process takes up to two months, leaving an intoxicating smell in the mid Autumnal months. Finally, after along fermentation period, you are left with the nectar. pure nectar. Perhaps this may be the closest thing we mere mortals wil ever get to tasting Ambrosia. Dried apricots and peaches, stowed in honey and elderflower syrup.

Derbyshire Dales Wine Society Christmas Party
This year’s Christmas Party was held on Friday 13th December, at 7.30pm.  The party was kicked off with a sparkling wine reception complete with some excellent canapés.  We then enjoyed a relaxed programme of streamed background music alongside a light-hearted, Call My Bluff themed blind tasting (“guess the grape” etc.). This was followed by a fully catered, high-quality buffet with plenty of time to enjoy it, washed down with a fabulous selection of wines chosen by our committee and the evening closed with an hour or so of dancing to a set of streamed music chosen by our members. The cost of the evening, including an extensive buffet and a generous and varied selection of quality wines, was £25 per person for both members and non-members.

Mark Bradbury, Ruta 40 :

Mark Bradbury from Ruta 40, an online merchant who specialises in finding and delivering boutique Argentinian wines.  For over 10 years, Mark and his colleagues have been importing directly from small wineries that aren't found in the big stores and supermarkets and they have built up a unique portfolio of high quality wines.
Mark took us  on a journey along the legendary Ruta 40 highway, which runs parallel to the Andes along the full length of Argentina.  The route passes through some of its best vineyards producing a range of well-known and not so well-known varietals and blends. It was a very enjoyable foray indeed!
Wines presented on the evening:
  1. Tapiz Sparkling Malbec Rose Extra Brut 13%  100% Malbec from their vineyard in the Uco Valley,  Made using the traditional champagne method with 10 months on the lees.  Short contact with skins to produce a bright pink colour.  Light, fruity, and easy drinking.
  2. Aranwa Torrontes 2022 13.5%  Vineyard located in Santa Rosa County, Mendoza , Pergola trellising system, Harvested by hand in early February
25 days of fermentation in steel tanks and then straight into the bottle.
  3. Accuro Torrontes 2022 14%  Grapes from Cafayate in the province of Salta,  High altitude vineyard,  Hand picked at the beginning of March from pergola trellising. Left on the lees after fermentation
  4. Accuro Clasico Petit Verdot 2019 14%  Grapes from Maipu, Mendoza,  Highly respected winemaker Alejandro Cánovas,  All of the wine was fermented in concrete vessels,  Rare to find a 100% Petit Verdot, usually found in blends.
  5. DYAS Sangiovese 2023 14%  Grapes from Los Chacayes area of the Uco Valley, which is over 1000m above sea level,  Temperature swing between day and night provides good conditions for growing high quality fruit, Very rare to find Sangiovese grown outside of Italy,  Intention is to produce a wine that is lighter than the traditional Argentinian style
  6. Vinedos Altamira Valley Malbec 2021  Harvested first half of April from a vineyard located in Vista Flores in the Uco Valley,  Vineyard sits at over 3,500 feet above sea level and is a combination of rocky, sand, and clay soils. Left for 14 months in French oak barrels, Delicious now but has lots of ageing potential

Nicholas Corfe, Go Brazil, Ipswich :
Nicholas provided us with an entertaining and informative evening that was enjoyed by all who attended.
Go Brazil was established in 2010 and is still the only company in the UK importing and distributing exclusively wines from Brazil.  On this occasion, we decided to up the budget so that Nicholas could showcase a selection from his premium range.  Wines presented on the evening:
  1. GARIBALDI ASTRAL BRUT NV 11% ABV.    produced by garibaldi, a well known and highly respected co-operative winery comprising some 450 families, and also go brazil’s newest supplier. this elegantly presented sparkling white wine, a 75% chardonnay/25% pinot noir blend, is made using the traditional method, remaining on the lees for a min. 12 months. it is the first brazilian wine to receive demeter organic certification and is also biodynamic. light in colour and fresh on the nose, it shows citrussy aromas, a touch of toast/brioche and perhaps some earthiness. dry (6gm/ltr. res sugar), fresh and clean on the palate with subtle orange/tangerine notes; persistent bubbles and a long finish.
  2. CAMPOS DE CIMA TRÊS BOCAS BRANCO 2023 12.5% ABV. a crisp white wine which originates in the furthest corner of sw brazil, bordering argentina, in a very small (16 htr.) vineyard, this is a sophisticated three grape blend comprising arinto & alvarinho (portugal) and assyrtiko (greece). light green-gold in colour; nose is strikingly fresh with melon, apricot and citric aromas discernible. fresh notes continue on palate which shows a zingy acidity; also noticeable is a flinty, almost saline, character. long, tangy finish. serve as an aperitif or pair with seafood/white fish
  3. DON GUERINO ‘VINTAGE’ TORRONTÉS 2022 12% ABV. produced from this distinctive argentine grape variety (here called ‘torrontés riojano’). wine is very pale but bright and with a pronounced floral nose – with the scent of jasmine, elderflower or perhaps lychee showing through. unoaked, light-medium bodied; palate is lively with notes of passion fruit & citrus, also a touch of honey. highish level of acidity makes wine very refreshing; finish is long, with a residual tang of lemon & lime. serve with white fish, chicken, ham or oriental dishes. bottled under screwcap.
  4. PIZZATO LEGNO CHARDONNAY 2020 13.5% ABV.  produced in the serra gaúcha by pizzato, another family of italian origin, this is a 100% chardonnay from a single bloc at 500m, previously styled ‘gran reserva’. barrel-fermented then aged in french oak barrels for 9 months (‘legno’ = italian for ‘wood’). golden straw colour; a complex nose, with nutty cashew & vanilla/oaky notes, overlaid with ripe tropical fruit, esp. pineapple. full bodied yet restrained and ‘creamy’; well balanced palate has hints of butter/vanilla/honey & hint of minerality. fresh acidity; has potential for further ageing. 9000 bottles produced.
  5. CAMPOS DE CIMA TRÊS BOCAS TINTO 2022 14.5% ABV. a robust, unoaked blend of tannat (50%), cabernet franc (30%) and petit verdot (20%). nose has concentration of ripe plummy/brambly hedgerow fruits. dry palate is rich, warm and medium-full bodied, revealing plentiful sweet dark fruit flavours, perhaps also a touch of pepper or dried herbs. tannins are ripe, rounded and smooth; drinking well now but will develop further. recommended with red meat, steaks, medium-flavoured cheeses, tomato-based pasta or rice dishes.
  6. PIZZATO RESERVA ‘NERVI’ TANNAT 2020 13.5% ABV. very deep garnet red colour. strong dark berry fruit aromas overlay more subtle notes of dark chocolate, spice, toast and leather. 11 months in both new and second use french barrels lends both structure and elegance. 25+ year old vines, so rich, succulent concentration of fruit. tannins have mellowed and wine is drinking well now – albeit still quite early for this grape variety – but will develop, becoming increasingly complex, with tertiary aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg aromas likely to show at a later stage. try with roast beef, casseroles or venison. decanting strongly recommended.
  7. GUASPARI VALE DA PEDRA TINTO 2021 15% ABV. from within the tropics, in the highlands of brazil’s coffee belt, this red is produced by the guaspari winery whose average altitude is approx. 1100m. unusually, climatic conditions demand a winter harvest, when temperatures are low and the weather is generally very dry. the ‘tinto’ here is 100% syrah, which has been aged for 11 months in french (3rd use) barrels. it shows typical varietal notes of cloves and spice on the nose, along with a heady floral perfume of rosemary and herbs. savoury-smoky and full-bodied, its heavyweight palate is wonderfully concentrated and finish exceptionally long. good ageing potential. try with roast lamb.https://www.gobrazilwines.com/about/

William Stevenson from Shaws Iberian a local Ashbourne-based company specialising in wines from mainland Spain and Portugal .

Shaws Iberian prides itself on showcasing the authenticity and depth of Spain’s culinary tradition, importing a select range of wines and foods. The focus of William’s presentation was the Rioja region of Spain. We compared wines of various colours, quality and age produced in a single vineyard by a family grower with a deep knowledge of the soils and the grapes that he cultivates.

Some of you will remember that William presented to us via Zoom during COVID so it was  great to meet him in person for the first time and to give our support to an imaginative and enterprising local company.

Halfpenny Green Vineyard, Staffordshire - Tina Abbis
This was Tina's second visit to DDWS.  Her first coincided with the Great Darley Abbey Flood of 2019 and many members were therefore unable to attend. The Halfpenny Green Wine Estate,is located just west of the village of Wombourne in south Staffordshire.  The first vines were planted in 1983 by founder Martin Vickers who still runs the estate with his family. They now have over 30 acres of vines along with winery, restaurant, shop and visitor centre. Martin and his sales and marketing colleague, Tina Abbiss, brought us a slightly different  “mix” of wine styles than is our norm, mostly at the lighter end of the spectrum.
Wines Tasted:
  1. RED SPARKLING 2021-Forward with black cherry and forest fruits, this wine is lifted by a smooth vescence on the palate, developing into a delightful, almost smoky finish. Will ntinue to develop for up to 5 years after vintage, but drinks beautifully now.
  2. BLACK COUNTRY GOLD - straw-coloured in the glass, with grapefruit and honeyed aromas. The sweetness on the palate, with apricots and dessert pears tickling the taste buds. Will drink at its aromatic best now up to 6 months after purchase.
  3. LONG ACRE 2021 - A lovely pale golden straw colour to this wine. Generous bouquet of nectarine, range blossom & elderflower. Gentle & fresh tasting with a delicate acidity and rounded body. Characterful flavours of pear, lime & melon are on the palate and leave a lasting crisp finish.
  4. PENNY BLACK 2021 - blended wine to reflect some of our earliest planted vines, this wine is pale gold in lour with refreshing citrus & herbal notes. Well-balanced on the palate, with ripe persimmon and white peaches drifting through.
  5. ENGLISH ROSE 2022 - subtle floral notes greet the nose, before ripe peaches and raspberries leap out of the glass into the mouth, coupled with notes of vanilla ice-cream. Quenching on the palate, with a medium-long zesty blood orange finish.
  6. PENNY RED 2021 - berries, plums and violets on the nose and palate, accompanying the deep ruby in glass, this English red blend is soft and approachable. A tease of vanilla and st from maturation in oak works well to build an ample, well-rounded finish.

A new presenter for DDWS.  This Gigondas vineyard, perched high in the Dentelles de Montmirail in Provence, focuses on handmade wines of the utmost natural purity - couture wines to reflect a typical mineral soil, biodynamic practices and low yields from a non-intrusive forward-thinking winemaker.  A great tasting including a fabulous young Rose and its aged counterpart.  Wines available at Waitrose.  The tasting was followed by our ever-popular cold buffet.
Tasting:  (1) Rose 2015 (Syrah & Grenache); (2) Rose 2010 (Syrah & Grenache); (3) Aliot 2012 (Grenache blend); (4) Astralabe 2011 (Grenache 75% Syrah 25%); (5) Heloise 2006 (Syrah blend); (6) Heloise 2010; (7) Abelard 2010 (Grenache blend).
